About Us

At Phoenix Grappling Academy, we combine our deep Wrestling background with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to create a program built on strong fundamentals, a relentless work ethic, and a team-first culture. Our mission is to help students of all levels—from beginners to competitors—develop technical skill, mental toughness, and confidence both on and off the mats.

F.A.Q.

1. What do I need to wear to class?

Students should be dressed for the style of grappling intended for that class.

  • Gi BJJ - Must have a CLEAN gi with an appropriate ranked belt. Any BJJ gi is acceptable. No shoes are allowed. If you are looking to purchase a gi for yourself or your child, check out some of these links:

  • NoGi BJJ - It is recommended to have a compression top or at least a non-baggy shirt with shorts that do not have pockets or zippers. If a student is wearing a T-shirt, we ask they tuck it into their shorts to prevent injuries. We have some NoGi gear on hand for sale, but it is not required to purchase our kit. No shoes are allowed. Here are some links to other suppliers:

2. What is "going live" or "rolling"? Do I have to do it?

Going live or rolling are terms used to describe sparring in the grappling world. This is a chance to try techniques on another person who is trying to control or submit you.

No, you do not have to go live. However, it is a great way to improve cardio, practice learned techniques, and have fun.

3.  Are parents allowed to watch classes?

We ask parents (especially those of kids younger than 8) to stay on location during class.  Premier Fitness members are welcome to enjoy a workout while class is going on.

If your child needs assistance in the restroom, please be available to help them. Our only restroom facilities are in Premier's locker room, which is an adult's locker room.

4.  Where do Phoenix Grappling Academy members change?

Our members are welcome to use the locker room and showers at Premier Fitness. Kids under 8 are asked to come to the gym in their gear so they do not need to use the locker room. No one under 18 is allowed to use the steam rooms.

For adults who get changed in the locker room, please wear flip-flops or other slides while not on the mat. We will have cubbies for flip-flops and slides matside.
